Back to School

School is back in session in Plantation at the American Heritage School. I am so excited for the 2007 - 2008 school year and all that it brings. This year marks the 3rd for me as a Patriot, and I firmly believe we have the program heading in the right direction. In my first 2 years at the helm of this program we were able to have 5 basketball players move on to play basketball at the next level. I don't spend much time evaluating other programs in the area, but I am confident when I say that 5 players in 2 years is a pretty good number. We were able to set the school record for wins last year, and, for the 1st time in school history we were able to win a playoff game. We have good players, and great character within those players. We must be doing something right.
This year will be fun for all of us involved with the program, and the 2007 - 2008 school year will provide many exciting times for the players, coaches, and fans at American Heritage School.
One of the cool things about working at a school is a finite beginning and ending to every year. I say this because the summer is a magical time - students (and sometimes coaches) grow up and mature, players get better, and programs evolve. Then in August, we get to start over and hopefully keep the positive parts of the program and improve upon the other parts. I really think we have some players who have matured this summer, and I KNOW I have evolved in a positive way during the summer.
I cant wait for the first day of practice (October 29th). Until then we are not allowed to have organized practices (we do hold open gyms once a week that any student at American Heritage is invited to and is void of coaching - we just play games for an hour). I am counting down the days until we get this thing rolling.
There has been a lot of talk around our school in a positive manner for our team. I am proud of that talk, but I also know that until we actually get to practice and play games that it is just talk, nothing else. I want our players to remain hungry and committed to getting better every day.
One of the college coaches sent one of our players a note once that said "If you get 1% better every day, then in 100 days you will be twice the player that you are now". Every player should look to get 1% better every day.
I have included an email sign up box. Please fill this in as we are attempting to stay in touch with you.

Sportscenter Top 10

The 2 players pictured above were featured on ESPN's Sportscenter this week. Yes, that's correct - Eloy Vargas and Raymond Taylor were play number 7 of the "Top 10" high-lights that night. Now I have been around high school basketball for a long time, and I have seen some crazy things, some good things, some not so good things, and some things that make you say "wow!". I have never seen 2 players from the same school (a small private school in the heart of football country in South Florida mind you) featured on national television. You would be amazed at the reach that this show has - I have been contacted by literally hundreds of people who say that they have seen the footage. I am proud and happy of the players, and, of course, I am proud of the American Heritage Basketball Program. GO PATRIOTS!
